Exciting times

I feel like we're in a really good place at the moment. We've got some exciting stuff going behind the scenes and there's a good vibe happening. I think the rest of this year is going to be great!

Had a good jam with Elias

Elias came over last night and we had a jam through some material. I also played him some stuff from my solo project. He's going to play guitar on the album as well, so I'm looking forward to recording those parts. Apart from that, I've been doing some more work on the tracks today. As you can probably tell, I'm fully into the recording of this album right now!

More solo project work

I'm lucky enough to get today off work so I've been busy working on my solo project. It's probably because I'm working with a particular batch of songs but there is a real cohesiveness to the project. They definitely feel like a group of ten songs that work well together. What's interesting is that I've grabbed them from different places. One dates back to before Grave Forsaken while some others are freshly written. There are some where I've used old lyrics with new music and there's one or two that were meant for Grave Forsaken but never got used. Whatever the inspiration, I'm happy to be working on them here in 2017!

Getting some editing done in the morning

I have a late start at work today so I'm getting some track editing done for my solo project this morning. I really enjoy working on this project, I always find myself wishing for more time! Still, I'm grateful for the time and energy I do get to spend on the project. It's coming along nicely.

Thinking about the Blackstump days

Today I was listening to "Scent Of Divine Blood" by Fearscape and it brought back a flood of memories. We had a lot to do with the Fearscape guys back between 2006 and 2010. We played 3 Blackstump festivals with them and made some good friendships. Unfortunately we were on the other side of the country so that scene withered somewhat. We also played Blackstump with Synnove, Paramaecium/InExhordium and Those Who Endure. Of course, we also played with Mortification as well. What fantastic days. We were part of a great scene going and all the bands were very supportive of each other. We were truly blessed.

I've been listening to Drottnar and Frost Like Ashes

I mentioned the other day I've been listening to some unblack metal. Today driving to and from work I was listening to Drottnar and Frost Like Ashes. I hadn't listened to either album for a long time so I really enjoyed revisiting them. I find unblack metal to be a fascinating thing. It is one of the more unlikely musical genres yet there are actually a good number of quality bands out there. Having listened to heavy metal for so long, I don't really find anything "extreme" anymore. I just enjoy the riffs and the skill of the musicians performing the music. Maybe we can incorporate some of those musical elements into a Grave Forsaken song down the track? We'll see...

I ran the city to surf marathon today

Today I ran the city to surf marathon. I just snuck in at under 3 and half hours, so I'm very happy with that. I'm sitting here typing listening to Drottnar. Like I mentioned a few days ago, I've been listening to a lot of unblack metal lately. I've been pretty busy and exhausted today but I will try to do some solo project work tonight.

Working on a song about the Ruskin Arms

When I was in the UK back in 2005 I wanted to visit the Ruskin Arms where Iron Maiden played some early shows. While I was there I wrote some lyrics and scribbled down some chords to try and capture what I was feeling at the time. I held onto that piece of paper al these years and now I've made it into a song. This track will go on my solo project. Today I've been working on the track and it is coming together nicely. This is an example of the solo project allowing me to try some different things. I've never considered using this song on a Grave Forsaken project but it seems quite appropriate for this album.

Solo project work

I've continued with my solo project today, though admittedly with errands to run I haven't achieved as much as I would have liked. It is definitely a case of getting as much done as I can when I can. The project is shaping up nicely in any case. I will try to continue work on that over the weekend, however I have the City To Surf marathon on Sunday, so a lot of my focus will be on that over the next 36 hours. I hope you all have a great weekend.

Reconnecting with some unblack metal

I'm not sure exactly why but I've been in an unblack metal mood the last few days, Back in the mid 2000s I was huge into bands like Antestor and Crimson Moonlight. For whatever reason, in recent years I've been more into my classic rock and metal. But like I say, I've been spinning some more extreme stuff lately. In particular I've been listening to Holy Blood and Antestor. I have dozens of Christian albums from that genre, so I've got plenty to choose from.

Tomorrow I plan on doing some more work on my solo project. I've got plenty to work with, so hopefully I'll make good progress.

Good progress made on solo project

I had a great time working on my solo project last night. A lot of work was achieved and it was in keeping with my goal not to spend to long on the album. I'm coming off quite a long project for the latest Grave Forsaken album (which isn't far off) so I'm keen to make this one happen a bit quicker. I'm doing some pretty cool stuff that I'm sure some of you will appreciate!

Light The Hall albums plus original EP set to be on iTunes on Spotify

Last night I went through and approved the two Light The Hall albums and the original EP for for digital distribution. They have been on CDBaby for a few weeks but now they will start appearing on other platforms. It's exciting because I've been meaning to get those out there for a long time and finally they will be!

Orders still coming through!

I've been so happy with the response to the 3 CD bundle deal. I received some more orders over the weekend and it never stops being exciting when another one comes through! I just really want to thank everyone who has ordered, your support is very encouraging. We're offering them at such a good price because I know how hard it can be to budget for things like music when the cost of living is so high. We really just want to give as many people as possible a chance to own some Grave Forsaken albums without having to bite too deep into the budget. If you're interested, check out the 3 CD bundle (without jewel cases) on our store page. It's just $10 Australian for a selection of 3 albums. All the details are on our store page.

So many song options!

While I've been working on my solo project I've been reviewing years worth of songs that never got recorded. I've literally got dozens of songs written dating back to about the year 2000. For whatever reason, I would write these songs, scribble down the chords and lyrics and then not always present them to the band. I think it is pretty normal to have a backlog of material. Anyway, going through some of my files and reviewing these songs makes me want to record them! I've already got 10 songs demoed for my solo project but I'm thinking of enlisting Elias and maybe recording another Gregory Salmela Project album down the track. Anyway, talk is cheap, I'm going to spend some time doing some real work on my solo project!

Working on some songs

Elias came over last night and we were jamming through some material. We've been getting together quite regularly lately and it's good to get some playing in. I've been able to set up the back room at my house quite nicely for rehearsal and that is definitely helping make it possible to jam more regularly.

Busy day at work

I haven' got much done today because I've had a super busy day at work. If I get a chance later tonight I'll do some more track editing for my solo project. I should get a good chance tomorrow to get some more things done but for now I'm feeling exhausted!

Up late working on my solo project

Last night I was up late editing my solo project. I'm kind of working things out as I go, but I've got 10 tracks in various stages of completion. After we've got the Grave Forsaken album released I'm going to start making plans to get this project released as well. I will probably do something similar to the Gregory Salmela Project album where I release it myself on Grave Forsaken Records. All that's in the future, but for now I'm definitely enjoying myself working on it.

Solo project progressing

It's a wintry Sunday here in Perth, so after my morning run I decided to do some more track editing on my solo project. It's coming along nicely and pretty soon I'll be at the point where I need some of my guest players to come in and put down some parts. I'm really enjoying the process of putting this together.
